The
Lost Mountains of Heroic Madness
v1.0
These two levels
form the first part of a set of four, a mini-series loosely based on motifs of
the Lovecraft story “At the Mountains
of Madness”. These motifs will become more apparent in the second part
(levels 3 & 4), in which (among other things) you’ll have to explore a ship
and shotgun a Shoggoth. :) In these first two levels, however, your objective
is to find your way through a derelict base camp taken over by mercenaries and
collect two artifacts (Seals of the Old Ones) along the way. (You will have to
find a third one on the ship in the level 3 in order to gain access to the
fourth and final level.)
Your download
includes the following files (with indication of where you should move them):
(CREATE
BACKUP COPY OF ORIGINAL FIRST)
(optional;
CREATE BACKUP COPY OF ORIGINAL FIRST)
è \trle\audio
With the exception
of uklogo.pak and Sounds.txt, none of your original files will be overwritten.
When you’ve copied
all files into their directories as specified above, open the Level Converter
and process the mountains_1.TOM and mountains_2.TOM files as usual.
IT IS OF
PARAMOUNT IMPORTANCE that
you have replaced the original Sounds.txt with the one included in this
download before you process the .TOM files, because if you haven’t, your
in-game sound output will be messed up most thoroughly.
Mac Users beware that your machine is likely to screw up
text files, which is harmful to the correct processing of files like Sounds.txt
and .SAM. Before extracting the zipped
file, you’ll need to uncheck a certain option, although I don't recall exactly
which (being on PC myself). If you
encounter problems of this sort, ask for help at Michael Prager’s Tomb
Raider forum. There's lots of Mac users there. Yours truly is also lurching
about there.
I have exterminated
a number of bugs that occurred in previous versions of these levels (flare bug,
flyby bug, disappearing and reappearing sentry guns, etc.), but proved to be
unable to get rid of one of them: You can’t use the Desert Eagle +
Lasersight when toward the end of the level you have to shoot a shatter
object through a narrow space in a wall. Apparently the angle at which you have
to aim is not supported (but the placement of MINE objects also seems to
interfere somehow). Chances are, however, that you won't have Desert Eagle and
Lasersight at your disposal anyway, since both items are secrets. Use the
shotgun instead (for best effect), or else uzis or pistols.
Gameplay is
non-linear. When you start the game, you find yourself in a large outside area,
centred around a deep chasm. You may start on top, in the middle or at the
bottom of it. Each approach has its own (dis-)advantages, but no area is
optional.
There are nine (9)
secrets.
